What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a treatment that is used to replace a missing tooth. A dental implant is a surgical replacement of tooth root (implant) into the jawbone which fuses with the bone over a few months. It provides a strong foundation for a fixed crown or removable dentures that are made in the laboratory to match your natural teeth.

Why replace a lost tooth?

Whether from trauma, bone loss due to gum disease, or tooth decay, a lost tooth leaves a gap in your mouth that can affect how you chew and speak. In addition, the empty space in your mouth can cause your other teeth to move into that space and also cause further bone loss in that area due to the lack of stimulation.

Am I a candidate for a dental implant?

You might be a candidate if you have missing, damaged or teeth with severe cavities. To answer this question you need a little bit more information. It is best to schedule a consultation with Dr. Sundaresh at Fourth Ward Dentistry so that we can figure if you have adequate bone and gum health to pursue implants.

What is the technology used to plan a dental implant?

We have the latest cutting edge technology to help you navigate the process and to get you the best care possible. CBCT in implant planning utilizes multiplanar and 3D images to aid in determining the exact height, width and anatomy of the bone, as well as the relationship of the edentulous sites with adjacent anatomical structures.

How a dental implant is fixed in the jawbone?

At fourth ward dentistry, the entire process of dental implants takes several months.

After complete assessment for implant eligibility, Dr Raghav Sundaresh plans the implant on the computer to insure proper placement. Then, the patient is scheduled for the implant placement procedure. The surgically placed implant will require 4 to 6 months to heal so that the body can integrate it.

After the healing period, the patient is brought back to begin the process of placing the crown over the implant.

Do dental implants need post-treatment care?

Recovery is relatively pain free. Patient may feel slight discomfort for a few days. If you follow the post op instructions that we provide, recovery should be straight. It is also recommended that the patient eat soft foods until the surgical area is completely healed.
